On a less kippy(1) note

1: From the flapper dictionary (nope, not done with that), Kippy: neat or nice

For a number of years, more than have passed since I was hit badly by a car, I've felt a touch mournful when I see a dead animal on the road. Biological creatures just haven't evolved to share a world with 3,000 pound objects moving at vehicular speeds. Our bodies are just as much biology, and sometimes, too often in my opinion, their interactions with vehicles turn equally bad.

On my ride home today, just before the intersection where I turn right off my street onto my street (Hey, I didn't name the roads around here!), I saw a large, smashed snapping turtle on the side of the road with bloody gore showing through its broken shell. I stopped. I approached. It moved its head. I was not expecting that.

I am not a huge fan of snapping turtles, especially since one spooked me out of my bath, also known as Batchelor Brook, two weeks ago. I prefer my fingers and toes unsnapped. Still, knowing this fellow animal was still alive, presumably in pain and suffering, I didn't know what to do. I felt some kinship of victimhood with it, but in its dying state, the presence of a human probably only added to its stress, so after a few moments of what was, at least for me, communion, I left it, not in peace, but at least alone.

One more perspective, this all was less than 200 yards from where I was hit. But yes, even without that connection, which I didn't realize until after I was home, I feel emotion when I witness other creatures destroyed. Be well.

To end on a positive note,
this animal communion of mine
was far happier!
